Digitally Composed Photographs
Artist Statement
This series of digitally composed color photographs “Battle Wounds” attempts to intertwine the horrors of war with domestic comforts. Informed by the conflict in Iraq and my personal life of parenting a young boy (born five weeks before we entered Iraq) this work seeks to reveal the insanity of warfare from the perspective of a mother.
The seductive fabric and wallpaper patterns are juxtaposed with combat imagery in a manner that is at once comforting and explosive. The work highlights the relentless and careful efforts of safely bringing up a healthy child while also suggesting the catastrophic impact war has on the preciousness of life.
Visually the imagery oscillates between abstraction and representation, as well as painting and photography, while using color as its primary means of attraction.
